In Kenya, manual business registration is minimal and has been replaced by online registration.

Registering a business name in Kenya

The process of registering a business online in Kenya in its simplified terms requires you to;

  • Visit the eCitizen portal and enter your username and password.

To successfully register a business in Kenya, you have to start with a name search to verify the availability of the name you wish to use as your business name.

To conduct a name search, you have to log in to your eCitizen account if you have one already in existence. However, you can go via a simple process and get yourself one if you don't.

To open an eCitizen account, you can visit the website of the registrar of companies; then, you will see the eCitizen account and then click on the sign-up button. This guides you through the whole process of acquiring a performance up to the final stage. Once you are done, the system sends you a verification email with a link. Then click on the shared link, and you will find the several government agencies you can interact with on display, which are usually five.

On display, click on the business registration service button from the several options, and you will be redirected to a page that will prompt you to register your business name. Then you can enter your best name and other required details to conduct a name search.

If your preferred business name is already in existence, you will be asked to find another name. However, if any existing business is not using the name, you are free to go and register once your business name is approved.
